Buying a new lawnmower should make life easier, not leave you wishing you’d bought something different six months later.
At John Osman Groundcare, we’ve been helping customers choose the right machinery since 1992. One thing we’ve learnt is that the “best” mower doesn’t exist – only the best mower for your garden.
Every week we speak to homeowners, estates, contractors and businesses who have been looking online at dozens of different machines. Quite often they’ve already decided what they think they need, but after asking a few simple questions we end up recommending something completely different.
Here are the eight most common mistakes we see when people buy a lawnmower.
Guessing the Size of Your Lawn
One of the biggest mistakes we come across is customers underestimating how much grass they actually have to cut.
Someone might tell us they have “about half an acre”, but once we look at the property or discuss it properly, it’s often much larger. That can completely change which machine we’d recommend.
A mower that’s perfect for a suburban garden may become frustrating if you’re spending two or three hours cutting every weekend.
If you have larger areas to maintain, it may be worth considering a ride-on mower or compact tractor from brands such as Stiga, Cub Cadet, Ariens or Iseki to save both time and effort.
Our advice? Think about how much grass you’ll be cutting not just today, but in the years ahead.
Forgetting About Slopes and Uneven Ground
Not every lawn is flat.
Banks, rough ground, tree roots and uneven terrain all affect how a mower performs.
We’ve seen customers buy machines that looked perfect in a showroom, only to discover they struggled on the steepest part of their garden.
If your property includes slopes or uneven areas, it’s important to choose a machine with suitable traction, stability and weight distribution. Sometimes the most expensive mower isn’t the right one—it’s about matching the machine to the job.
Ignoring Wet Ground
British weather isn’t exactly predictable.
If your lawn stays damp for long periods or has soft areas after rain, machine weight becomes just as important as engine size.
Heavy machines on wet ground can leave ruts, damage the lawn and make mowing far more difficult than it needs to be.
During a demonstration or conversation with our team, we’ll always ask about your ground conditions because they have a huge influence on which machine will perform best.
Buying on Price Alone
Everyone has a budget, but choosing the cheapest mower isn’t always the cheapest option.
A well-built machine that’s correctly matched to your property will often last significantly longer, perform better and cost less to maintain over its lifetime.
Rather than asking “What’s your cheapest mower?”, it’s often better to ask, “Which mower is going to suit my garden best?” That’s usually where the real value lies.
Choosing the Wrong Cutting Width
Cutting width has a huge impact on how long you’ll spend mowing.
A narrow deck might be ideal if you have lots of tight access points, gates and flower beds. On larger open lawns, however, a wider cutting deck can dramatically reduce mowing time.
Before buying, it’s also worth measuring your narrowest gate or access point. We’ve seen customers buy a machine only to realise it won’t fit through the entrance to their back garden.
Forgetting About Servicing and Parts
A lawnmower is an investment, and like any machine, it’ll need maintaining.
Before buying, ask yourself:
- Can I easily get spare parts?
- Is there a local dealer who can service it?
- Will I still be able to get support in five years’ time?
At John Osman Groundcare, our relationship with customers doesn’t end when the machine leaves the showroom. Our workshop and mobile service engineers are here to keep your equipment running for years to come.
Dismissing Robotic Mowers Too Quickly
A few years ago, robotic mowers weren’t suitable for many larger gardens. Today, that’s changed dramatically.
Modern robotic mowers can maintain surprisingly large areas, cope with complex garden layouts and deliver an excellent finish with very little effort from the owner. Many customers who visit us convinced they want a traditional mower leave seriously considering a robotic solution once they’ve seen what the latest technology can do. If you’re short on time or simply want consistently well-maintained grass, they’re well worth considering.
Buying Without Seeing the Machine First
This is probably the biggest mistake of all.
Buying a mower online from a specification sheet is a bit like buying a car without sitting in it. The controls, visibility, comfort, manoeuvrability and cutting performance all matter, and they’re impossible to judge from photographs alone. That’s why we encourage customers to arrange a demonstration wherever possible.
Being able to compare different machines, ask questions and speak to someone who uses them every day often makes the decision much easier.
The right lawnmower isn’t necessarily the biggest, the most powerful or the most expensive.
It’s the machine that’s best suited to your lawn, your budget and the amount of time you want to spend maintaining it.
At John Osman Groundcare, we’ve been helping customers choose the right machinery for more than 30 years. Whether you’re looking for a pedestrian mower, ride-on mower, compact tractor or robotic mower, our experienced team will take the time to understand your requirements before recommending the right solution.
If you’re unsure where to start, get in touch or visit our showroom. We’ll happily talk through your options, arrange a demonstration where appropriate and help you invest in a machine you’ll still be pleased with years down the line.
